If you are a developer, I encourage you to carve out an hour and watch TechStars CEO David Cohen’s presentation at RailsConf 2012 (30 minute presentation and outstanding 30 minutes of Q&A). He starts out with the assertion that “developers are the new investors” - how could you not be interested in hearing more about that?

David and I wrote a book last year called Do More Faster: TechStars Lessons to Accelerate Your Startup and this is his riff to a room full of developers about some of his top tips. Special bonus – see a photo of me in my pajamas at minute 7.

“developers are the new investors”

For a few developers, this is true, and for this select group, in most cases it makes more sense for them to provide equity to a startup in the form of sweat equity than incurring the brain damage that often occurs in raising money.

But few Internet professionals (including Web developers, Web designers, SEOs) are entrepreneurial, just as few Americans are entrepreneurial. So Cohen’s statement applies to the select few that are entrepreneurial.

  That’s not what he meant – he means it as a “signal” – specifically, where developers CHOOSE TO WORK is a powerful signal for investors.

I have to thrown in my 2 cents.

The idea is everything! Execution, which I call process, is in fact a bunch of ideas strung together.

Brad, you’ve told me the “execution principle” before but it’s just doesn’t make sense. I agree the process can make or break a business. But, there are just too many people stealing ideas for them to not be the top value in this world.

    One thing to keep in mind is you and I are amid a varying description of our discussion. The video states ideas are “worthless”.
    
    But, you and I have discussed that they are both important. You feel the execution takes top position. I feel the execution is made up of ideas and thus the idea takes top position. In other words the execution is slave to the idea, not vice versa.
