This is a note from your Gmail tech support person (my life in a parallel universe) just trying to help with whatever frustration you are having today.

Over the weekend I noticed that my iPhone (which had recently upgraded to the latest iOS (5.0.1) was now regularly giving me an error from within the native email app. A little box would pop up and tell me that my Exchange Password was incorrect. I use Gmail, but use the Exchange connector on the iPhone (as recommended by Google). Until recently, this was working just fine.

I entered my password 100 times or so in a fit of stubbornness. It worked every now and then. However, when my iPad started borking with the same error message, I decided to figure out the problem.

My search “gmail iphone exchange password incorrect” turned up some interesting stuff. I quickly figured out the problem what the Google Captcha. Apparently the Microsoft connector logs in but then borks on the Captcha which is never surfaced in the connector. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to unlock (or disable) the Captcha in Google Apps.

It seems like Google could fix this on their end without waiting for Apple. Just don’t toss up the Captcha whenever an iOS device hits Gmail. My guess is a recent push on Google’s side broke this as I didn’t notice a real iOS upgrade correlation. While at first I thought it might be iOS 5.0.1, I realized there was a few day delay, pinning the issue most likely back on Google.

Either way, my near term frustration has once again vaporized and I can resume ferociously emailing on my iOS devices.

The Problem is that the Gmail “fetch new data” setting needs to be on “fetch” and not “manual”

if you want it to fetch manually.

- Go to – Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calenders>Fetch new data
- turn push off
- set fetch to Manually(global setting)
- Click – Advanced
- Click – yourusername@gmail.com
- Make sure this is set to fetch. (it won’t fetch because you have set the global fetch setting to manual)
It should now recognize your username/password

  Are you sure that’s right? I’ve had it set to “Push” for a long time and it has worked just fine.

This bug has been around for a while. I had it on my first-gen iPhone 3 years ago. Even my mom had it a few months ago on her 3GS. I finally set a bookmark on both our phones to deal with the captcha in Safari to the unlock captcha link you listed above. It’s definitely an issue with email for Google apps. Regular gmail folks don’t seem to have it.

Have you upgraded to Google’s two-factor authentication system, using the “Google Authenticator” app?

This app is available on both iOS and Android, and basically implements an OATH token in software.

Google is moving toward supporting two-factor authentication in all their products, but for their applications which do not yet support it, you can set up revokable “Application-specific passwords”. The idea is that you set an application up with one of these once, and the application remembers it. The security benefit is that the app never gets (or remembers) your more-privileged account master password.

I believe these do not require captchas, and I’ve successfully used them with a number of apps, including the iPhone’s exchange-gmail integration.

Now that there’s a native gmail app, it made sense to me to switch to that and turn off the exchange integration. But maybe there’s a good reason not to do that?

Why would any IT org choose to introduce that risk into their company? Why do even you tolerate it? Didn’t you just get over a nasty “707 error” problem with Google? I’ve used Google Apps at 2 startups around SF. One of them was happily moving to Exchange & Active Directory as I left and the other was waaay too trendy to ever use a Microsoft product (they now use whatever Zynga uses).(My 15 month old is now biting my laptop screen. I think it’s bedtime.)

    I agree with the Exchange server issue. I wouldn’t run my own server without a decent IT staff, but I would definitely do (what is now marketed as) Office 365.
    The killer features I dearly, dearly missed were IRM (DRM for email) and “Tentative” accepts for meetings. Those would be worth $5/seat/month. I can’t tell you how much amazing information was not shared due to lack of IRM. I’m still learning things that I should’ve known at Playdom, and I’ve been gone over a year.

i did the 2 factor authentication today and it broke my gmail. now i’m getting pop ups with incorrect password and cannot get onto gmail via the native app. getting gmail either via “gmail” or “exchange” in the native mail app both don’t work.

I tried disabling the captcha thing, whatever that is, and it didn’t solve the problem I was having with gmail exchange (on my IPhone) not recognizing my password(s). I’ve changed my password and still it won’t recognize it. I’ve changed my passwords so many times I don’t know what my password is anymore!!! HELP!

This happened to me yesterday. After trying the CAPTCHA solution that Brad proposed several times, it hit me that a new variable has now been introduced: 2-step verification. Yesterday, I was prompted by Gmail to turn on 2-step verification and I did so without thinking about it too much. However, when you do this you have to create app-specific passwords to link into your account—something I didn’t realize when I set it up. Shortly thereafter, iCal, Sparrow, and my phone were continually throwing password errors despite the CAPTCHA being turned off.

Moral of the story? Either don’t turn on 2-step verification, or go through the hassle of making a separate password for every single app you use that ties into your various google accounts (Gmail & Apps), which is a PITA. Bad construction of the user experience by Google, IMO. As a user, I don’t want to set up 5+ passwords for one account.

via email: Thanks for your posting – very helpful. Until it does not work. It (the whole process) drove me nuts. For days and hours, I tried it again and again. Finally I found that the “culprit” in my case was the 2-step verification process on my Google account I had done in my security paranoia. If I remember I did it after I had first successfully synced Gmail with my iPhone, Gmail only. Then I wanted to sync also contacts and calender – that’s when the problem started. So finally I revoked and renewed the 2-step verification password, and fortunately had a hunch to write down the one time glimpse of a 16 letter password, generated by Google. Once I put this insane password in when the password was requested in the last step of setting up my Gmail account on my iPhone – it worked.

I am having the same problem and I have tried all of these troubleshooting steps. Mine keeps telling me that my password is incorrect setting the Gmail up as an Exchange Account and I have 2 step verification turned of.

The local Gmail app works fine, but the reason for needing this set up as an Exchange account is to sync the Gmail contacts to my phone. Help!

  I had this happen again and solved it with a more complex password. I deleted all my random mobile accounts, changed to a STRONG password, and reauthenticated everywhere.

No need to turn-off the captcha stuff, just enter yourname@gmail.com under the username setting. If you just put ‘yourname’ instead of ‘yourname@gmail.com’, you’ll get the password errors.
