Great list but I have to say if you're picking one of Iain Banks' Culture novels The Use Of Weapons has to get a shout. The best IMHO

Have you read "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope" by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer? Something about it reminded me of both you and Todd. I think it should be required reading for every high schooler.
