Mt. Democrat, Mt. Cameron and Mt. Lincoln

Dave Jilk, my first business partner (Feld Technologies) and I have settled into a nice annual tradition of climbing a 14er each August.  This year we climbed three in one day – Mt. Democrat, Mt. Cameron, and Mt. Lincoln.  We started at 6:15am Saturday morning.

By 8:15am we were at the top of Mt. Democrat.

The purists don’t count Mt. Cameron as a 14er since there isn’t enough descent between Mt. Democrat and Mt. Lincoln.  But I count it because by the time you get to the top of Mt. Cameron you definitely feel like you’ve climbed another big mountain.  Plus, I was powered by my TechStars socks.

After 6 hours, we made it back to the bottom.

What an awesome way to spend a Saturday!

Congratulations – And thank you for this blog, brought back memories of hiking 14ers in Colorado – oh well, I will go hike a 5er in San Francisco this weekend.

A 5er – now that made me laugh.  Come visit Colorado!

Since lots of runners read your blog I thought it worth mentioning the aerobic dynamic. On Democrat you were struggling at first because I was leading at too fast a "warmup pace," but then did better when I let you lead at your own pace. But as we started up the ridge to Cameron/Lincoln, your marathoner blood had you pulling me at my maximum pace (or maybe just a little more…) I found this interesting because most people I hike with get progressively more tired, whereas you have a very different curve.

    Congrats on the climb.

We were over at Mt. Solitude on Saturday morning and had an awesome day as well.

I still have yet to climb a 14er in Colorado. We were hoping to get over to Mt. Elbert or Long's Peak before the snow rolls in. Thinking about a Mid-Late September climb.

Do you do a lot of climbing?

  • Brad Feld August 25th, 2009 2:18 pm

I only do one climb a year.  I’m a marathon runner and the 14ers are a totally different thing which wrecks my “long run” on the weekend.  But – I love doing them – once a year.

Hey Brad, do you know of any good websites to track your 14ers climbed? I just found 14ers.com but didn't know if you'd seen any others…

  • Brad Feld August 25th, 2009 2:49 pm

14ers.com is the one I know of.

Hey Brad, did you wear a HR monitor? If so, how many calories did you burn?

  • Brad Feld August 26th, 2009 3:13 am

I took my Garmin 305 but forgot my heart rate chest strap so I didn’t get the HR data!

Great posting – I enjoyed the pictures. I was thinking about doing Democrat and Lincoln towards the end of October. Can you give directions to actually getting to the trailhead? I have read reports that it is via private property and inaccessible. Thanks in advance.

    What a weekend!

You climbed a mountain in a day, whilst the most of us sit around watching TV, eating BBQ and drinking beer.

    凄いねー!尊敬します。 m.|.m
