I totally agree. I thought the cash for clunkers program was absurd. I think the cash for appliances program is obscene. And – I think you know that Eric Norlin is demonstrating his clever wit and sarcasm (e.g. he’s giving a conference discount – not really for Wi-Fi – but using the Wi-Fi thing as a joke since most conference Wi-Fi sucks.)

actually I think it's solvable now.

take # of attendees times at least 2 devices per attendee.

plan for that amount of concurrent connections.

if you're not spending 10-12k per 300 people, you're not spending enough.

I am sick of paying hundreds of dollars for conference wi-fi, but WTF is up with the rebates for the appliances companies? This is total bullshit, why are my tax dollars subsidizing people who want to buy a damned fridge? Further, this benefits no one but the person who buys the new appliance, and the company that made/sold it. This government propping up of private business is not only unfair, it's anti-competitive. Usually, I can't take people griping about politics, but what in God's name is going on here? Sorry for the rant, but this just put me over the edge…

I use terrible conference Wi-Fi as a networking opportunity! I bring along my portable 3G Wi-Fi router and plug it in in the corner with the SSID "AskFoskett". And I'll be darned if folks don't see me, ask for the password, and start up a conversation!
