101010 – Fun With Numbers

I love numbers.  I was thinking about numbers and dates on my run yesterday.  Here’s a few fun ones for you.

101010 – On 10/10/2010 the answer the life, the universe, and everything will be revealed.

030309 – Isn’t it fun to have square root day be “prime square root day”?  How many of them are there in the 21st century?  How about 02/02/04, 03/03/09, 05/05/25, 07/07/49.  That would be five.  So there are a prime number of prime square root days.

090909 – Number 9, Number 9, Number 9 is the day that the Beatles version of Rock Band is released.  As a special bonus it’s the second day of my Q3 off the grid vacation.

Got any other good ones for me?

  1. Here's a fun number: By 2010 we'll be lending $6 billion to entrepreneurs in other countries, and investing $5.8 billion into start-ups in the United States.

We'll be giving more to other countries than our own start-ups.

    Fascinating.

  2. 101010=42, very insightful.

Maybe you should become a Talmudic numerogist.

  3. Nov. 11th, 2011. How can you not love a beautiful and perfect palindrome in 11/11/11?

Sure, 9/9/09 is cool, but not nearly as perfect.

  4. Yes – 111111 is a very nice one.  Plus it has five prime factors (3*7*11*13*37).  Unfortunately when converted to base 10 it’s not prime.  Almost but not quite ideal.

  6. Slightly off topic… but still a great number trick:
    Take the number three.
    3 divided by 2 = 1.5
    1+5=6
6 is evenly divided by 3.

    3 divided by 4 = .75
    7+5=12
    12 is evenly divided by 3 AND 1+2 = 3
It works all the down and all the way up.

  7. Have you read this book, Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet, the autistic savant who recited Pi to 20K digits or so? If you like numbers, you'll love this book.

  8. 1729. The smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.

One of my favorite little anecdotes involves the Cambridge mathematician G. H. Hardy and the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan:
"Hardy used to visit him, as he lay dying in hospital at Putney. It was on one of those visits that there happened the incident of the taxicab number. Hardy had gone out to Putney by taxi, as usual his chosen method of conveyance. He went into the room where Ramanujan was lying. Hardy, always inept about introducing a conversation, said, probably without a greeting, and certainly as his first remark: ‘I thought the number of my taxicab was 1729. It seemed to me rather a dull number.’ To which Ramanujan replied: ‘No, Hardy! No, Hardy! It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways."

I think this story is in the book Archimede's Revenge, which is a really fascinating collection of mathematical tales:

  10. As with most forecasts, this one has the potential to be really wrong given the hockey stick in 2009 and 2010 associated with microlending.  That said, it’s definitely a provocative statement!

  20. Well I guess 101010 should also be included – 10/10/2010 – this would happen only once in a lifetime.
