Note that a web developer is still called a "web developer" at lijit. Sounds like they are serious about tech. Being on the buy side of internet ads, I would be suspect of someone contacting me calling themselves a "catalyst".

Why can't web 2.0 companies call a salesperson a salesperson? This is not a trivial question because it points directly to the inherent discomfort with selling that so often accompanies tech people. When I hire a salesperson (and we are hiring them) I want someone who is totally comfortable with their role, who, in fact, relishes it. Over the years I've built sales teams and the reps who want some kind of cool title inevitably can't sell. Great salespeople (the only kind you want to hire) know their role: To bring in revenue, period. They are not 'Ad Sales Catalysts', they are sales people.

I've been using Lijit, and whatever your beef with their titles, the group is good. I added it to our site. I worked with their tech support on a couple of unusual blogroll issues (the mapping still seems somewhat clumsy for Lijit non-users, but I like it), and they were fast, responsive, and friendly. Seems like a great bunch, and the data coming from the additional plugin is pretty useful, much like google analytics.

Martin, its a sales job, the description is for a sales person. The title? You really care about the title? If it makes you feel better, we will change the title to "In Case You Are Confused, This Is A Sales Job. Your Salary Will Be a Mix of Compensation And Commission. If You Arent Comfortable Being A Sales Person, Then Dont Apply For This Job."

Having fun with titles is one of the wonderful things about a startup. Having multiple responsibilities and truly making a difference in a company is the wonderful thing about not working with a staid, corporate, old way of thinking company.

If you care about titles, this is not the company for you, and what better way to vett that then to have a non-standardized title?

micah, Lijit's VP of Being a Pain In The Ass.

Micah, et al,
Sorry to gripe but there is definitely a bias against getting down in the trenches and selling in a lot of tech start-ups- obviously not at Lijit! One of my criteria for hiring salespeople is that they must be proud of being in sales, relish it in fact. Some newbies can gain this but very often there is a cultural bias against selling and titles sometimes are designed to mitigate that. It's the old sanitation engineer vs. garbageman thing.
These days the sales people are the heroes...
