I was born in Homer and raised in California, but I still have family there (know the Jays?) and get to visit every couple years. For me, it's almost unspeakably moving. Alaska seems to be on a different scale than anyplace else I've been. Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming - all beautiful, vast, impressive, but Alaska is a land apart.

Alaska just seems to have that -er...the mountains are bigger, sky wider and brighter (in the summer!), storms heavier, and the sun even sweeter.

Man, it's time to go back.

Luke – I so agree. I love it up here, especially when the sun graces us with its presence.

I don’t know the Jays – we’ve had a place up here for six years and keep a very low profile. My wife Amy grew up (until she was 8) in Anchor Point and she still knows a few people there, but no family.
So it goes - decent view, btw. My next favorite thing about Homer in particular is that every house I've been in has local art and a musical instrument - I've seen a piano in all but one cabin way past town.

I'm enjoying it vicariously - cheers.

Ah - one of my most favorite places on earth!

Your blog and Twitters bring back many good memories of my time in Alaska during high school (I'll pass on sharing the years) and my recent trips back to Whittier, Homer and Tutka Bay.

My thoughts in the summer always turn to the Greatland, but I can skip those long dark winters for sure.

Thanks for sharing.
