Joel Spolsky Rants on Architecture Astronauts

I love a good rant.  Especially about software.  Joel is one of the best ranters out there – when he gets going there is no stopping him.  Last week’s rant was titled Architecture astronauts take overHe takes Microsoft Live Mesh to task and reminds us of the legacy of Hailstorm, Groove, Lotus Notes, and – well – the past.  And he explains why synchronization is not the killer app.  Well – it sort of it – as long as we don’t realize it’s happening.  But then again, the real problem is that there just aren’t enough programmers in the US anymore.

Joel – nice rant.

He may have had an interesting rant, but … doesn't matter if it's Hailstorm all over again at least MS is trying to create a workable sync platform. Remember "Mesh" that we've all seen is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm running PortableApps inside Mesh and feel quite liberated. Imagine the next step as the APIs open up and tools like PortableApps or Firefox can store your settings and synchronise your data in the cloud.

If Ozzie and the team *have* learnt from the last few itterations I think it's the start of the next big thing…

I look forward to it all coming together this time around. I should have been clearer – I don't necessarily agree with Joel's rant (I don't know that I know enough yet) – I just liked the rant!
