Thanks for the mention Brad, Rob – Brad is right, for specific publisher search we generally blow away Google Site Search and for searches of a social graph of connected people you would pull your hair out doing that with Google Custom Search. But more importantly Google gives you no feedback or statistics of what readers are doing. Check out Brads Stats page here http://www.lijit.com/users/bfeld/stats. I still laugh that the top Google search that brings people to Feld Thoughts is “ibrick” from “Boca Raton”, common where else are you going to get that :-)

Terrible. All Google finds are the monthly archive pages vs. the individual post. The post isn't even listed!

I absolutely agree with this post! I'd had several painful and frustrating experiences as well with searching for a post within blogs. Two years ago when I started first following all the web excitement news, the first site users reference in SV is TechCrunch. But for the longest time, there no *damn* way to do a search. I would read an article that I felt had some great stats or a neat startup profiled, come across the thought months later and having to sit for about 30-45 minutes going back page after page of that blog.

TC have not installed Lijit yet, but at least they do have a search now. I love Lijit -- first tried it on redeye.firstround.com's blog.

Brad - appreciate all your help with BigSwerve/Lijit. I was channeling you at the Miami Marathon this weekend - ran with a guy who finished his 50th marathon on his 50th birthday on Sunday in Miami. And you know how there are often bands playing along course? Well there was one playing Rock Band - complete with large screen TV so all the runners could see...

The added benefit of Lijit (the first benefit is the increased trust one has in the results of a search, given your trust of the publisher), is that context is applied prior to the search versus through the query itself. My favorite example of this is doing a search for "nda" on Brad's blog gives you highly contextual results, whereas the same search on Google provides the National Dance Association, New Drug Application and the National Demolition Association - because there is no context to the search, it HAS to be applied in the query itself.

(Disclaimer: As a "reformed" search engine marketer, it was one of the things that made Lijit so interesting to me, and lead to my decision to join their team.)

Todd. Great move. I was wondering if Lijit will expose the BigS front-end search tools to the web?

I was using one of those tools to find new bloggers by getting a list of all commenters on my favorite blogs. For example, tell me the URLs of every commenter on techcrunch. This is a great source for finding new blogs but currently is too manual a process to research..I would guess 50% of commenters on techrunch link to their own blog in their comment.
