When people find out that I’ve spent a lot of time in Alaska, they often ask me what it’s like. After struggling to describe it in a simple way that anyone in the lower 48 can relate to, I finally came up with something several weeks ago.
Alaska is an order of magnitude larger than Colorado and has an order of magnitude less people. Plus it has an ocean.

That actually isn't very descriptive at all. I guess you were intending to say "Alaska is JUST LIKE Colorado, EXCEPT…"
Otherwise it would of course be equally descriptive to say that Alaska is 2.74 orders of magnitude larger than Rhode Island and has half an order of magnitude less people, and both have oceans. Or pick your arbitrary geographic boundary and its associated land area and population statistics.
Point being, what you seem to think is clever doesn't really say very much at all about what Alaska is LIKE.
Ah – you are probably right. I think it's clever and everyone I tell it to nods their heads up and down and smiles, but there's nothing quite like going there (and I often think I'm more clever than I am.)
