Certainly is an interesting sector. I see better potential in the enterprise, where there's more control of the internal social network (i.e. no duplicate accounts, no internal spammers, etc).

This is a curve just as cell phone adoption, tv, dvd, and the telephone. While 60%+ of the worlds population now has an email address, the curve has reached its zenith. SMTP (email) was designed in 1982 before there was an 'internet', spam , phishing, online banking, huge files, or SMS. The reason that email hasn't been replaced is the installed user base. There hasn't been enough pain in the marketplace to overcome that.

We think that's changed. From a historical and technology perspective, no on should think that paper mail should be the defacto delivery method for secure or important documents, but it is. Why? SMTP was built before needs were there. It will never be secure because it wasn't designed to be secure. It NEVER will be. The secure email systems currently in existence offer no improved functionality and impose yet more restraints on both the sender and recipient.

It's a big problem. Huge. Monumental.

(Shameless plug coming) I just dumped my other ventures in order to address this as part of the startup team at Sendside Networks. http://www.sendsidenetworks.com to lead the evangelism and user experience teams. (We're about to launch our invitation only beta test.)
