I’ve got a large stamp collection that I’m considering selling. The obvious – but relatively labor intensive – way to do this is on eBay. I poked around looking for some other options, but didn’t come up with anything particularly credible. Any stamp collectors out there willing to give me a clue?

If you do go the eBay route, you might want to try using something like ChannelAdvisor Pro (http://pro.channeladvisor.com) to help automate posting and managing lots of auctions. It could potentially save you a lot of time.
I work for ChannelAdvisor, but I’m an engineer/entrepreneur that’s read your blog for years not a sales guy searching google for random opportunities to pitch our products

One much less labor intensive approach (if you decide to go the eBay route) is to sell your whole collection as one giant lot. You probably won’t make as much money as if you sold them individually, but that removes almost all the hassle. You could also just sell them on consignment using an eBay reseller.
One other thing to keep in mind as you think about doing this. If you have older stamps in really nice condition, consider getting them graded by a professional grader (I use PSA–a division of Collector’s Universe. Their stamp division is called Professional Stamp Experts…www.psestamp.com). In the limited baseball card collecting/arbitrage I do on eBay, you can make a lot more money on a mint card by buying it raw, grading it, and reselling.
Just a few thoughts…
I collect U.S. stamps so I may be able to help you out if you have just a U.S. collection. For world stamps I have no clue.
The U.S. Postal service sells a great guide to ALL U.S. stamps that will give you some ballpark pricing if you have some of the older/rarer stuff (mainly stuff earlier than 1920 or so). You can pick these up in any larger post office.
If you want a dealer, check out Mystic Stamps (http://www.mysticstamp.com/) I have always had good dealings with them and think they’re reputable.
If you are selling old U.S. I might be interested personally (I’m not a pro, just a lifelong amateur).

You might also look at the American Philatelic Society. You can phyiscally submit your items in bulk to them, they’ll scan the items and then list for sale online on stampstore.org.
