iBrick

I officially have an iBrick (an iPhone that does not appear to be able to be activated by normal human means.)

Ibrick

I’ve had an entertaining series of problems.  I’m still amused, but getting closer to annoyed.

I picked up my phone last night at the Flatiron Apple Store on the way home from the airport.  It took me 45 seconds to purchase it (no line.)  I tried to activate it when I got home.  iTunes went through its upgrade cycle to 7.3 and then gave me errors that I didn’t have the right version to work with the iPhone so I had to deinstall / install iTunes 7.3.  I did that and tried to activate.  It got hung up trying to check my credit and told me I had to go to an AT&T store to get a pre-authorization code.

I went to sleep, woke up, took care of the puppy, did email, went running, and ended up at the AT&T store at 11:30.  By 12:30 I had a pre-approved credit code – it appears that the Lifelock service I use on my credit reports broke AT&T’s algorithm.

I had lunch at the Rio, sat down in my new office, and tried again.  Now the iTunes store “may be busy.”  Apparently “The Apple” is unhappy with me.  The iBrick sure is pretty (useless) so far.  I guess – per iTunes recommendation – I’ll try again later.

  1. Are you running Vista 64bit? I’ve heard that the iPhone isn’t compatible with it.

    Just curious…

  4. Brad, I have a 10% off anything apple coupon (I got it for being the 1st in line at the Flatirons apple store opening. I’ll let you use it if you buy a shiny new macbook (or pro).

I promise that’ll get it working. Apple store is open till 9 tonight. It’s not your phone that’s the brick…

  5. Matt – it isn’t Vista. I fired up my Mac, upgraded to iTunes 7.3, went through the drill, and got exactly the same error message. I think I’m done. I’ll try one more time in the morning.

  6. Brad, we had some trouble activating iPhones on a business account and had to switch to a regular family plan. Is this new service or a transfer? Firewall problem maybe? I’ll come kick the phone’s ass tomorrow if you want… you need to experience it.

  7. @Michael – thanks for the offer. We got two of them working (Ross’s and Ryan’s) so I’ve got plenty of chances to play around with it. Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going to end for me – it’s already clear that the Exchange integration is weak (via IMAP instead of ActiveSync) – so I’m going to stick with my Dash.

  8. I think essentially the world is going to get divided into Exchange users and non-Exchange users.

Here is another example where that simple choice has divided you. I remember the Vista decision was largely because Entourage on the Mac blows so hard, despite some other wonderful things. Now the same with the iPhone.

On my end, I’ve kicked Exchange to the curb, and never been happier. If you really need push email — Yahoo offers it (for free) for the iPhone — it syncs contacts/calendar with Yahoo as well.

Just a reminder of the ripple effect of pain to the rest of your computing existence that Exchange causes. :)
