It may sound crazy, but I first learned to program writing VBScript macros for windows. I used a template, which is available here http://vbscript-macro-template.blogspot.com/ and I just added to it and also tried to understand everything that it did. Now, several years later I am writing my own desktop and database applications.

Recently I've been devoting my time to learing LOLcode (http://lolcode.com/).

I think the "contributions" section really shows the rich development community and the quality of the participation.

Brad,

You should check out Hackety Hack - http://hacketyhack.net/ - it's a fun implementation of Ruby aimed at the same age group you're describing for Scratch/Logo.

Similarly, it also has some social network features (you can share "hacks" (programs) with your friends) and the example apps are things that seem more relevant than "hello world". One of the first things you build is actually a YouTube movie downloader.
