How do someone's arms and shoulders feel after making gestures at their computer for a couple of hours? I recall that was one of the things that killed touch-screens as a long-term UI: after a few minutes of holding their arms up to the screen, most people's arms got tired. And this seems sort of like the same kinds of motions, just without the screen.

It's a great new paradigm and all that, but I can type on a keyboard for eight hours at a stretch with no real problem. Will I be able to act like a symphony conductor for that long?

A decade ago I thought virtual reality would cause significant changes to UI, but I was obviously wrong. I guess VR never had a compelling reason to exist; it didn't make UI easier or more efficient. But, I still wonder if some element of VR would help improve user interaction with computers. Maybe we'll see some changes to UI with Microsoft's new Window's Presentation Foundation (WPF).

Brad,
I think your friends should get this in front of Chris Shipley for Demo 2007 right now. Chris is at Chris@GuideWireGroup.com.
Fantastic UI concept.

That's great that somebody's moving toward commercializing that. I don't know which direction your friends have taken this tactile computing stuff, but here's a look at it from academia:
