Most internet businesses are fundamentally about &quot;what does the traffic cost&quot; and &quot;what dollar revenue do I convert that traffic to&quot; (spammers and pornographers have understood that from very early on and it&#039;s a key factor in their &quot;success&quot;).

And as a note to the viral marketers amongst y&#039;all who scoff at the notion of &quot;paying for traffic&quot;: I am quite sick of hearing about &quot;viral marketing&quot; as some web 2.0 panacea of where demand will come from. Many companies (Ludicorp, Craigslist, Blogger) have worked very hard to create products that are not only inherently viral but have spent good money developing tools that encourage demand-creation - and that&#039;s an investment in marketing if I&#039;ve ever seen one: it can be expressed in $/traffic.
