Another point is that we did this the hard way: there was no WWW at the time, so we couldn’t just download the precepts/mission for 20 companies and work off that. We really had to invent them. I find it interesting that these precepts are very similar to what many companies have today as their “Values.”

It’s also worth mentioning that part of the reason that dental office is still using their software is that you hooked me up with them in 1998 to do a Y2K conversion. Caring about customers isn’t a superficial marketing pitch, it’s a way of life — you and I both cared enough to keep them going.

I think you’re right that the partner retreats helped keep the business and the relationship on track. I’d recommend it to anyone with a partner. It gets a little unwieldy with a full management team, but the idea of “getting away” to discuss things still is valuable… we had Xaffire’s first management offsite a couple of weeks ago and it was very productive.
