Financial fitness is something that might appear to be a strong point for me but in reality it's a high learning curve consisting mainly with "fear of failure" motivation. But for those of you who would enjoy being smarter then

More important that picking professionals carefully is to pick your customers (and vendors) carefully. While we survived, one year we had 40% of our customers completely implode leaving us high and dry for our time, and even holding the bag for expenses incurred. Smaller businesses fail at a frightening rate, and while you may be managing your business well, a large enough financial problem with a vendor or customer could be fatal.

Great article. Ive actually printed this one out and will carry it around with me for a while. I completely relate to and agree with the idea of many entrepreneurs being techies with a sense of what should be done to properly structure the business, but little interest in actually doing that work. As a right-brained creative person growing a design firm, Slice of Lime, I find that when I read articles like yours I immediately have two thoughts. 1) That these are obvious points. 2) If they are so obvious, why am I not practicing them?

For anyone else approaching a business with a creative background, I would recommend the book, The Creative Business Guide to Running a Graphic Design Business, by Cameron S. Foote. While affirming my notion that there is a book for everything, this book slaps a tangible reality onto the romantic idea of running your own design firm. A lot of it coincides with your article - that you cannot build your business without organization, common sense and a strong foundation.

Thanks for sharing this.

Just adding on to the previous comment by Ed. Are there any freeware/opensource software available in this regard?:)

Feld Comment: I don't know of any good freeware / opensource accounting software. The best inexpensive small business options are Quickbooks and Microsoft's low end products.

Brad - can you expand on your definition of "financial systems"? What's a good example of a young company that did it well? Also, what do you like to see in terms of actual applications (Quickbooks, Great Plains, Oracle, etc.)?
