As in everything, companies, people, competitions this applies. My own favourite is the bear in the woods story. A grizzly bear is chasing two campers in the woods. One camper turns to the other and says "how are we going to outrun this bear?" The other camper responds with "I don't have to outrun the grizzly, I just need to outrun you." One of the reasons that the Japanese auto industry is having great success is "minimalist" design. If you opened a Japanese auto hood in the early 80s you would see a very high quality "minimalist" design. That is the materials and components were designed / manufactured for their design life with minimal weight, bulk and cost. A comparable Detroit auto was built like a tank and totally unnessary.
