If you are struggling with whether The Gates is true art, I recommend the following test sent to me by Dave Jilk. I got a 75% – which means I’m merely a pretty good guesser.

My wife Kim - an art major and sculptor - got 50%. As for me - artistically illiterate - I got 92%.
She had two explanations for this:
1) I am better at tests
2) She was offended by the idea that author's art "means nothing" and so gave him a lot of lattitude
I think the test is rigged. I got a 75% too and I haven't thought about abstract art since art appreciation in college...
