Fortunately for my wife Amy, she’s aware that I’m a 15 year old boy trapped in a 39 year old’s body. So – when Netflix delivers Caddyshack to us, she let me watch it on a Friday night after I’ve worked much too hard, exercised too much (and still struggled to get all the weight off), and been entirely too serious for the past five days (ok – as serious as I get about anything – which isn’t that serious since I am really a 15 year old after all.)
In 1980, I saw Caddyshack about 10 times (I think the only movie I saw more frequently was Star Wars, but I was only 12 then so I can be forgiven since I hadn’t yet matured enough to have perspective.) God only knows (and he’s the only one I’ll ever tell) how many times I’ve seen Caddyshack since, although it totals a number close to my current age. I hadn’t seen it in a while (where “a while” is obviously relative) and it was a delight. I even noticed Amy sneaking looks and laughing at the antics of Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase (wow – what a cast for 1980 comedy.)
I feel much better (and younger) then I did at 5:30 this evening.

That movie is one of the best ever. It's up there with the Marx Brothers as far as I am concerned. Josh watched it last year (without us knowing it) and has been begging me to see it again.
One of the greatest movies of all time.
Was at the AT&T a few years back and Bill was actually doing some Caddy Shack schtick... amazing in that he must of done it 10,000 times by now but he still does it with gusto and it's still funny.
The very cool thing is I ran into him later that day and he was gracious enough to leave my (then) 2 month old daughter a voice message... which was also hilarious. ("Elle, heard you were just born, really glad you're here, my only advice to you is, 'da da... goo goo... da da goo goo'. You know the deal.")
I gave Thomas a dancing gopher for Christmas ...
Caddyshack is in the hall of fame DVD collection ..at one point in college my roommates and I had every line commited to memory. Animal House also a good rival.
I used to work out with John Barmon, the actor who played Spaulding. He was the sweetest and most down to earth guy and he hardly ever brought up his acting days. Once he got warmed up though, he had plenty of stories to tell about the film and how it effectively ended his acting career (role selection does count for something). I haven't seen him in years but believe that he is still kicking around the Boston cooking scene.
Chevy Chase is a comedy master! Christmas Vacation is another great classic.
Caddyshack is a very important film that continues to demonstrate three things to entire generations:
1. A monologue that doesn't include the words "Cinderella story" isn't worth a damn.
2. Instead of using the Heimlich maneuver, thrust a jug of wine toward a choking victim while shouting "cannonball!" It might not work, but it's so much funnier.
3. Along with music and numbers, the phrase "stoned to the bejeezus" is understood everywhere.
Caddyshack: Don't leave home without knowing it.
Quick, without going to the credits or the internet, what performer was in both Caddyshack and in Animal House? There was only one. Full credit for the performer's names and roles played, partial credit for roles played only.....
