BE ON FIRE

A few weeks ago a guest post titled Minimum Viable Personality appeared on Fred Wilson’s blog. The author was a Giant Robot Dinosaur who has been dishing out wisdom in all caps in the comments on Fred’s blog for a long time. I’m a huge fan of FAKEGRIMLOCK, occasionally commenting on his comments, but often laughing out loud or smiling with recognition of their brilliance when I saw them. And, I grinned with relief when I finally made his #NOEATFRIDAY list.

Recently, while pondering how Yoda would deal with Optimus Prime, I got a tweet from FAKEGRIMLOCK asking if I wanted a guest post from him. Without hesitation I said yes. Following in all its awesomeness (with illustrations), is another missive from my favorite Dinobot.

BE ON FIRE

WORLD FULL OF IDEA. ALL NEED IS BRAIN. MOST HUMANS HAVE BRAIN.

IDEA BY SELF IS COLD. JUST SIT THERE. DO NOTHING.

IF WANT DO SOMETHING, NEED FIRE.

NEED BE ON FIRE.

WHY BURNING MATTER

MAKE STARTUP HARD. IT HARD BECAUSE YOU WRONG. YOU FAIL.

FAIL COLD? GO HOME. QUIT.

YOU NOT QUIT. YOU BURN. FAIL IS FUEL. MORE FAIL, MORE BURN. BURN FAIL UNTIL ONLY WIN LEFT.

THAT WHY BURNING MATTER. NOTHING STOP PERSON ON FIRE. NOT SLEEP. NOT SICK. NOT BROKE. NOT BULLET. NOT END OF EARTH.

NOTHING.

FIRE MAKE SMOKE

ANGER IS SMOKE. FIRE DESTROY. DESTROY MAKE NEW THINGS GROW. COLD PEOPLE HATE FIRE. NO ONE WANT TO BE FERTILIZER. FIRE NOT CARE.

LOYALTY IS SMOKE. PEOPLE FOLLOW FIRE, GET HOT. NOTHING STOP PERSON ON FIRE. PERSON ON FIRE WRAPPED IN HOT CROWD? THAT FIRE CHANGE WORLD.

WIN IS SMOKE. PERSON ON FIRE NOT CARE ABOUT WIN. NOT CARE ABOUT MONEY, FAME. WIN HAPPEN WHEN BUSY DO THINGS THAT MATTER. THINGS ON FIRE.

WHERE IS FIRE? LOOK FOR ANGER. MIDDLE OF ANGER IS CHANGE. MIDDLE OF CHANGE IS HOT CROWD. MIDDLE OF HOT CROWD IS WIN. MIDDLE OF WIN IS FIRE.

HOW MAKE FIRE?

WORLD IS BROKEN. FIX IT.

RIGHT IDEA HARD. RIGHT IDEA HURT. RIGHT IDEA IS HOLE IN WORLD.

RIGHT IDEA MAKE BURN INSIDE TO FIX. CAN TAKE DAY OFF FROM IDEA? IT WRONG ONE.

FIND IDEA THAT BURN, GRAB WITH BOTH HANDS, NEVER LET GO.

THAT HOW MAKE FIRE.

YOU MUST BURN

EVERYONE THINK WAY TO STARTUP IS TALENT + IDEA + MONEY.

EVERYONE WRONG.

STARTUP NOT ABOUT MAKE THING, SELL THING. STARTUP ABOUT CHANGE WORLD.

WORLD IS COLD. YOU MUST LIGHT WORLD ON FIRE.

YOUR FIRE.

YOU. MUST. BURN.

In order to stay on the #NOEATFRIDAY list, I promised FAKEGRIMLOCK that this would be licensed under Creative Commons. Anyone can do anything they want with this, including FAKEGRIMLOCK (as long as no infinite loops are created.)

This is always the best test for deciding to undertake anything in life. I always say “Do it well or not at all” but that passion is what pushes you through.

Any entrepreneur knows that physical feeling they get that forces to you work or do something on an idea. I’ve always described it as a fire so I can relate to the Grimster on this one.

This reminds me of something I heard Masahiko Yamada, the President of Fujitsu’s Technical Computing Solutions Unit, ask an audience at an event earlier this year: “When you wake up in the morning, are you changing the world or just getting through the day? Or just making money?”

He went on to point out that “the best innovators’ primary motivation isn’t money. They just want to change the world.”

I met with a very experienced start-up CEO recently and talked about this, in a slightly different sense. We talked about what distinguished successful start-ups from unsuccessful and he came to the conclusion that the only difference is founders who believe they can change the world and are completely focused on doing so. I thought this was a very profound perspective.

He also commented that, again in his experience, this is a lot harder than you’d think. He said the problem isn’t in the beginning. It is as the company grows. And the problem is that there are millions of little distractions that pop up. The founders gets dragged into the weeds on tons of small, inconsequential issues. HR issues, technical details, you name it. All kinds of stuff that is important and seem important and is often couched as impacting the vision but really isn’t. He said this is inevitable.

The problem is that the only one who makes the company happen, makes this vision perpetuate, is the founder. No one else can make this happen and no one else can pick up for the founder and carry that vision forward, the fire as FAKEGRIMLOCK puts it, no one else can keep the company on track.

    Food for thought.

It’s nice to romanticize the notion of changing the world by steadfastly holding a singular vision.. but that’s a rarity. Passion (eg.Fire) is key to stay motivated, but for early stage startups, the focus should be on agility and adaptiveness, listening to the analytics, cutting losses quickly, and changing course if necessary.  Brad’s quick pivoting incubator successes are proof of this, so lets not get so sappy.

If your startup is going balls to the wall without a purpose then you are not a startup. You are just a couple guys who want to be a startup. YOUR VISION NEEDS TO BE SOLID. You can not be wishy washy about what it is you want to do. You need to KNOW without a doubt what it is that you want to do.  Till then your not a startup.

Now that you know… you damn well better be agile, able to cut losses and change course. But then it’s not about changing the vision it about changing how to achieve your vision. You can be as agile as you need to be while still being on FIRE.

I know not Brad so I can’t speak directly to that, but regarding ideas in incubators…they are not startups yet, the incubator churns out ideas that become startups, at that stage in the game people are looking for vision, looking for ways to change the world, and dropping a idea that they don’t have any clue how to implement is not what this article focuses on. It’s looking past that to the point were you have latched onto something and you are preparing to carry it forward.

        O.

I’ve always noticed that I can be more aggressive when standing up for someone else than standing up for myself. Funny that.

          • JamesHRH

My 9YO daughter just swam her first relay race. Anchor leg. Hit the pool 6 secs behind leaders. Came out 4 secs ahead. She had never been under :50 for 50M. Swam the anchor leg in :40.

It is, I think, more common than people realize, the desire to help others turning on people’s aggression / competitiveness / fire. The problem is that most people who are like this need to be thrust into these positions: they see proactively placing themselves in a leadership role as egotistic and self-centred.

Or they lack confidence, because they have never put themselves in these positions and doubt that they have what it takes. It turns out, most people do have what it takes.

That is where GRM comes in.It is important for people who are motivated by helping others to also do for themselves. If you do not take care of yourself, you end up not being able to help the people that are relying on you. Be on Fire for others and you!Similarly, people who are oriented around their own interests need to balance that with a genuine interest in helping others. Be on Fire for you and for others.

In the end, the order doesn’t matter, just the balance.

Its great stuff and GRIM is the real deal.

I’m reminded of Chris Dixon’s post about selling sugar water vs. changing the world.  Selling sugar water is easy but the wrong idea.  Changing the world is hard but the right idea/worthwhile.  After all, would you really set yourself on fire in order to sell sugar water!

    • JamesHRH

There is a couple of bucks in selling sugar water, don’t forget!

      • Anonymous

sure but wasn’t the entire point that people with big ideas don’t care about $$.  If you are focused on money (i.e. selling sugar water to zombie’s that don’t care about their own health) you won’t change the world.  I don’t think Kahn Academy is focused on money, but he is single handedly changing the world.

        • JamesHRH

I think it is important to remember that Jobs ( and I assume GRiM) believe that money must be managed. You cannot change the world without it.

Some people are just not up to changing the world. Sculley should have stuck to making sugared water, as he just took Apple and turned it into Pepsi.

And, to be honest, if you just want to make a bunch of dough and not really change the world, it’s not the worst outcome in the world (you are not on fire, but, you are not stone cold either).

That’s what I was hinting at – it was definitely too cryptic.

Earning money is just a secondary effect of being on fire, in this world, in this society. In the other side money wants to buy fire, but just gets the ashes. Do not believe me, check it yourself.

Now that’s a kick-ass article if I ever saw one!

People have often criticized me for my fire. When I was young it was: “You’re too competitive, can’t you just take it easy?”. When I set out to chase my dream of becoming a world-class independent stock trader it was: “Your ambition will end up costing you big”. When I started my first and current tech company it was: “Aren’t you being rash suddenly going into something with the goal of changing the world?”

All I can say is that I kicked their butts in sports and school when I was young, ended up making huge returns and a living trading professionally for years, and now… I’m about to change the world.

    And it’s because of fire.

    So criticize away.

    FIRE GET LAST LAUGH.

Fire can often come off as arrogance, but I know that underlying it is the humility I’ve needed to admit I’m wrong countless times, be willing to fail over and over in pursuit of the larger goal, and constantly be open to learning.

        • JamesHRH

Yes, but fire about you making a bunch of money trading is not the same as fire about changing the world and creating value for other people.

Failure tolerance is a personality thing – I don’t like failure, I like preparation. I am not opposed to failure, I have failed a lot. But I am no longer as open to it – I’m 46 – and think I have failed enough.

Failure is for the young, generally. Failure in the old is sloppiness or a lack of caring. By my age, you should know what it takes to success and your fire should burn bright.

As people age, their unwillingness to expose themselves to the fire is their greatest failing.

          • http://www.opentrader.com Ziad Masri

I see your point of view, but what I may not have explained well is that making a bunch of money trading was not at all what it was about for me. That was only a validating result. In truth I was deeply passionate about trading, lived and breathed it, and did it for its own sake. I quit my job and moved half way across the world to chase my dream of becoming a trader. I left my family and friends and lived 2 years without income to do it. All that fueled me was the fire of my passion for the activity. The same fire that an athlete or musician feels for their art. Those guys may not change the world, but the fire is nonetheless the same fire.

Did my trading change the world? no. It changed me through a journey of self-discovery where I had to reach to the depth of my soul to survive and succeed in an endeavor where 95% fail. But I also did have a yearning to change the world in some way. And that’s why I ultimately gave up trading and started a new tech company who’s goal is to bring transparency to the retail trading and investing industry and thereby improve it as a whole.

It’s the same fire that fuels this desire as the one that fueled the seemingly less noble desire of making money trading. But ultimately, if it hadn’t been for that previous pursuit and all the self-growth I experienced through it, I wouldn’t be trying to change the world now.

Anyhow, thanks for the chance to clarify ;)

    Exactly.

It’s impossible to read your posts and not jump out of your chair and start burning the fire to change the world. Nicely done FG

Everyone fired up about Jobs bio.

Who knew that his spirit would come back in the form of a Dinobot from the future?

    • http://www.feld.com bfeld

Jobs is a great example of someone who was always on fire. Every day. Every moment. And the results speak for themselves.

      • JamesHRH

I like your model – take a week every quarter to regenerate the fire.

Burnout being the term it is just isn’t an accident!

    SEE COLD DOT.

COLD DOT = BROKEN. BROKEN = OPPORTUNITY.

    FIND MORE DOTS. CONNECT DOTS.

MANY DOTS = KINDLING. TALENT = MATCH.

KINDLING + MATCH = SMOKE. DETERMINATION + PERSPIRATION = OXYGEN.

    SMOKE + OXYGEN = FIRE

KEEP ADD OXYGEN. MORE OXYGEN = BONFIRE. BONFIRE BURN HOT.

    ENJOY MARSHMALLOWS.

    • panterosa,

My daughter decided next year she wants to be a dot for Halloween. Black dot. Like black hole in cartoons which can be moved and thrown around to make hole into other space. Like Right Idea.

She loves FG. Gets his quotes from me all the time. She’s 10, and gets the whole vibe. She saw the MVP post. I’ll show her this tomorrow. She knows ‘on fire’. She’ll eat it up. She knows I am on fire, she knows she is on fire, and when she can even burn brighter. Only way to live. So glad she gets this at her age.

i don’t really understand: failure, winning, changing the world etc any more.

i’ve recently started to get the feeling like i’m at home. at home on the internet. that literal feeling when you’re in the house you grew up in as a child etc.

everything changes on the outside, but all this technology is an internal experience. i come back to it day after day, to the narrative i follow, to the narrative i understand.

if i do change anything it’s just like changing something in my own house.

and i’m calm because i find my own house relaxing.

So inspiring! I’m printing it in the office as I write this. We are a 6 person startup. We are going to be actively discussing how to a) have the core team embody being on FIRE b) make the FIRE spread to EVERY person who joins our team as we go forward (we are hiring two more in a few weeks). Would love to see a follow up post from anyone who has tips on how they have already achieved this!

I loved this piece. I loved it a lot because giant robot dinosaurs are genius. And I am in essential agreement with 99% of it. With one exception. It’s the tricky bit about deciding in what way the world is broken and what qualified good idea will fix it. There are people out there full of fire to solve America’s energy future by fracking the Northern plains states for natural gas. Good idea? Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin were full of fire but the social ideas they were selling weren’t so great. The soon-to-be concluded Iraq war was a fire lit by the idea of removing weapons of mass destruction — except it turned out the WMD’s did not exist. I think the robot dinosaur is expressing the need for total commitment beautifully. But for the most part but I’d prefer ideas that made a pleasant hole in the world (the iPod) to ones that make a nasty hole (Chernobyl). Sometimes a human can have a stupid idea but they are so fired up they go ahead and damn the consequences. That can be a “powerful learning experience.” Humans like to experiment. You need fire to try anything new. Fire is essential. But what is most tricky is to figure out which are the good ideas and which are the bad ideas — before you run the experiment. You do want to be careful what you set on fire.
