How A Bill Really Becomes A Law

After my Schoolhouse Rock posting on how a bill becomes a law, several people sent me alternative versions of the video. This one rang true to me.

This one – not so much – but it made me laugh out loud.

And then there’s this.

  • As much as I dislike the general idea of lobbyist, it’s a First Amendment issue; the right to “petition the Government for a redress of grievance.” It’s somewhat like the “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” theory: If you like firearms, then the NRA is doing God’s work; if you don’t, then they’re the devil incarnate. Or Greenpeace is saving the environment/killing business, the AARP is protecting senior citizens/preventing good government by making Social Security off limits, the NEA improves schools by protecting teachers/kills schools by protecting incompetents, Lockheed Martin is defending our country/encouraging pointless wars — et al absurdium.

    • Generalizing the things you point to, “Never underestimate the impact of a loud minority.”

    Data from here:
shows that in 2010 an estimated $3.49 billion was spent on lobbying Congress with 12,986 people registered as lobbyists (and likely far more unofficial ones). Most of the public doesn’t have time to learn about all these myriad programs in order to object to them (do you?). Thats why federal spending has gotten out of control, leading to the debt problem we face and why voters need to begin to complain rather than letting lobbyists have their way because voters say nothing. Unfortunately according to this: “POLL REVEALS: Americans Are Still In Deep Denial About The Deficit”

Please go to which lets registered voters contact their congressmen (so they know its a constituent and not a spammer from another district). Tell them to balance the budget *now*, that $1million per household to pay federal IOUs is too much! links to it, so tell everyone to visit there! Or try which lets you find direct email/contact forms.

Please spread the word to those in denial about the debt and deficit.
Federal government will need >$1 million per household to pay its IOUs!
    > $116 trillion =”official” debt plus money  short for future social security, medicare, etc
Even its “official debt” of $14.2 trillion  is $123,754 per household!
