A Roll Cloud

Comments (20)

In my effort to keep you on your toes, take a look at the “roll cloud” below.  It’s totally worth a click through to the APOD site and a moment of contemplation on a large monitor.

See Explanation. Clicking on the picture will download
 the highest resolution version available.

I’ve seen small rolls clouds in the past although I didn’t know they were called roll clouds, nor did I have a clue how roll clouds were formed.  While 720p videoconferencing with Skype on my Internet connected TV is pretty cool, nature continues to amaze me.  Time for a run.

Wow. If I was on that beach, and had seen this cloud (without having ever seen a picture of one), I would be seriously contemplating the end of the world.

If you see clouds that look like a mothership scraping along the ground, run. I took this photo a couple years ago during a tornado warning. It ended up tearing up our neighborhood pretty bad, power was out for several days for hundreds of thousands of people. National Weather Service estimated winds were up around 90-100mph.

    Never saw one before, awesome!

Twenty-three years ago I saw such a cloud in Wichita, KS. I was 11, and vividly recall being awe-stricken and fearful, but also gaping in wonder, as I had never before seen anything like it or even heard of anything like it. I was stuck outside while it passed and remember feeling like a large hand was gripping the bottom of my guts the whole time. Massive expressions of energy generally do that to us, no?

    Looks like photoshop to me.

After poking around more it looks like the real deal.

Although the photographer did touch up the image by brightening up the sky. Which makes me wonder if this is a composite.

    Incredible shot! Thanks!

This looks photoshopped. I don't believe this is a real picture. The clouds look fake.

I was able to take pictures of a roll cloud in Eastern Okla. I myself had never seen one in 40 yrs. of living in Okla. It looked just like the one pictured.
