I Miss Firefly – xkcd’s The Race

Summer Glau just totally kicks ass.  So does xkcd – it’s my every other day dose of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.

You’ll have to go to xkcd for the rest of them.  Race 2, Race 3, Race 4, and the grand finale – Race 5.  How could anyone possibly thing that it was a good idea to cancel this show.  Weren’t they afraid Summer might kill them?

Don't forget to hover over the comics for the alternate text!

  • I bought the DVD as a gift for my parents about a year ago and forced them to try a few episodes. They were surprised—not only by much they enjoyed it but that they enjoyed it at all, and I think there's a great clue why it was canceled.

You've got to sell "a western in space" as being sharp, funny, compelling, and human because it at first sounds like it would be none of these. Fox did a lousy job with promoting the show and put some time-slot nails in the coffin near the end.

Along with Freaks and Geeks and Arrested Development, this is one of those shows where I didn't start watching until after the plug was pulled.

    • Totally agree.  Fox really botched it on this one.

You have made my day – Firefly is a favourite of mine (also got introduced on DVD after the fact), and now xkcd is too. Love all the inside jokes too- "Captain Hammerpants" indeed… Thanks for sharing the laugh!

Couldn't agree with you more about Firefly. It's one of Darby's and my favorites. Like everybody else here, we didn't find it until after we saw the movie. Have you seen Dollhouse, also by Joss Whedon? Definitely not as good as Firefly, but for some reason I keep watching.

    • I couldn’t get into Dollhouse.  Something was just off about it.

I second the Dollhouse. It has potential, and it's totally Whedon riffing on Rossum's Universal Robots, purported to be the first place to mention the word "robot." Yeah, I like socio-historical linguistics. Let me push up my glasses now.
