Homer Alaska Webcam

Comments (5)

I put a webcam up at my place in Homer, Alaska.  You can access it via my about me page or – thanks to Rob Shurtleff (who recommended the webcam to me in the first place) – on (it’s listed as the Homer Webcam and there’s a pretty neat time lapse option.)   It turns out there’s a second webcam in Homer pointing at the Augustine Volcano.  As you can see, it’s been a shitty weather day here, but I managed to pound out a 15 mile run, finish off The Stolen Child, and enjoy The Devil Wears Prada.  In case you are curious, the camera is a StarDot NetCam Megapixel – it’s a remarkable device that includes a Linux server and an Ethernet Port.

In case you are interested in a real-time view back home at the Republic of Boulder, your place in Eldo is visible in the distance on this webcam – click on the Custom Home Construction Cam. Move your house up to the ridgeline (!) and with the PTZ/10X optical zoom it would probably be seeable in the morning light.

There are a few more in Homer. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has two looking towards Augustine Volcano from Homer: visible light (also in Zeitcam) and low light (includes near infrared). There are several pointed at a beach in Homer as part of the ARGUS Beach Monitoring Station.

Another unique program is the FAA Alaska Weathercams from all over the state (but not in Homer.) These webcams have really helped bush pilots make better fly/no-fly decisions.

It would be great to add an audio stream so we can hear the ambient sounds. Beach views with seagulls, Mount Killimanjaro with animal calls, North Park, CO with quaking aspen… It sure would add life to the stills and doesn’t cost much bandwidth.
