Gmail Steals Users From Hotmail

Return Path just released a study showing that a majority of users of Gmail come from existing Microsoft Hotmail users who are switching to Gmail.  The stats are interesting – of new Gmail users that switched from something else:

  • 57% from Hotmail
  • 27% from Yahoo
  • 16% from AOL, MSN, and Comcast
  • How many people use Return Path? “57% of the 1000? gmail users registered with Return Path migrated from Hotmail”

  • Return Path receives email change of address registrations from consumers at the rate of 30,000 to 60,000 per day. The mere fact that the number of Gmail registrations as a percentage of our total usership is so low is interesting in and of itself, let alone the relative percentages of different ISPs from which Gmail is stealing share. -Matt
